Universal Credit provides payments to help eligible recipients with their living costs. The support is usually paid once a month but to continue receiving the support, claimants will be required to inform the Government of any changes in their circumstances.
These changes need to be reported to ensure the right amount of money is paid each month.
- Changes in circumstance can include:
- Finding or finishing a job
- Having a child
- Moving in with a partner
- Starting to care for a child or disabled person
- Changing their mobile number or email address
- Moving to a new address
- Changing their bank details
- Having rent going up or down
- Changes to their health condition
- Becoming too ill to work or meet a work coach
- Changes to earnings (only if the claimant is self-employed)
- Changes to their savings, investments and how much money they have
To report these kinds of changes, a claimant will need to sign into their online Universal Credit account.
Additionally, claimants may need to repay money if they’ve been overpaid, gave wrong information or did not report a change soon enough.
A claimant may be taken to court or have a penalty issued if they gave incorrect information or do not report changes at all.
To be eligible for Universal Credit initially, claimants will need to be on a low income or out of work entirely.

Additionally, claimants will need to be aged between 18 and state pension age, have less than £16,000 In savings and be living in the UK.
Universal Credit payments will be made up of a standard allowance and extra amounts for certain living costs like having children and paying rent.
The standard allowances in place will provide between £342.72 and £594.04 per month depending on the claimants age and relationship status.
Benefit cap rules may limit how much money is paid out to claimants.
Claims for Universal Credit can be made online and when applying, claimants will need to have the following ready:
- Their bank, building society or credit union account details
- An email address
- Information about their housing
- Details of their income
- Details of savings and any investments, like shares or a property
- Details of how much is paid for childcare if they’re applying for help with childcare costs
Universal Credit is paid once a month into a bank, building society or credit union account.
Following an initial claim, the first payment can take up to five weeks to arrive.
Beyond this, claimants will be paid on the same date of every month.
If a payment date falls on a weekend or bank holiday, claimants will be paid on the first working day before.
