A TV licence currently costs £159 per year, which some individuals will need to specifically budget for. This may be more likely for pensioners who have a limited sum of money to work with every year, due to managing their retirement income. Previously, age was a fact which was taken into account when deciding which Britons would be able to receive a free licence to watch television in their homes, with all over 75s not required to pay. However, changes then took place. As part of the last Royal Charter, responsibility for TV licences for the over-75s was passed from the Government to the BBC.
The broadcasting corporation said a continuation of funding for free licences for all older viewers would force it into “unprecedented closures” of services.
As a result, the rules have changed, meaning only certain older people will be able to get a free licence. It is worth checking if one could still get the entitlement without a cost, or at a reduced rate.
The only individuals who will be able to get a TV licence without any cost at all are those who are over the age of 75 and who are in receipt of Pension Credit.
Pension Credit is a sum which is intended to provide extra money to help with living costs if a person is over state pension age and on a low income.
The sum of money can also help Britons with housing costs such as ground rent or service charges, which can rack up quickly.
When applying for Pension Credit, an individual’s income will be calculated, and if they have a partner, their income will be calculated together.
It tops up weekly income to £177.10 if a person is single, or £270.30 as a joint income if a person has a partner.
People can apply when they are 74 if they already receive Pension Credit. But they will still need to pay for their licence until the end of the month before their 75th birthday.

Pension Credit is considered to be a “gateway” benefit as it can provide Britons with multiple other forms of support to help in their day-to-day lives.
- Housing Benefit if one rents the property they are living in
- Support for Mortgage Interest if someone own the property they live in
- Council Tax Reduction
- Help with NHS dental treatment, glasses and transport costs for hospital appointments
- Help with heating costs
To be eligible, a person must live in England, Scotland or Wales and have reached state pension age.
If a person believes they are eligible for a free licence, but do not currently have one, they are encouraged to speak to a TV Licensing advisor to request an application form.
People will also be able to apply for a TV Licence online, or by phone – whichever option suits their circumstances best.
Alternatively, while a free licence is not possible in other circumstances, there are discounts which are made available to certain individuals.
Firstly, those who are in an eligible residential care home should be able to get what is known as a “special licence”, which costs £7.50 in total.
People must be either retired and over the age of 60 or disabled, and their housing manager can make the application for them.

Another circumstance where a person may be able to get a discounted TV licence is if they are registered blind, or live with someone who is.
The discount is worth 50 percent and could therefore be especially useful in reducing this cost.
The licence must be in the blind person’s name – if it is not, then a person can make a new application to transfer it into their name.
Britons will need to provide their existing TV licence number when they apply.
