Netflix customers issued urgent warning – ‘don’t take the bait’ as worrying scam emerges

From films to box sets, Netflix is the way in which many people access both small and big-screen entertainment. However, while accessing the service may be a way of relaxing for millions worldwide, its customers are being urged to stay alert.

It comes after Action Fraud has received more than 2,000 reports about emails purporting to be from Netflix.

Rather than coming from the service, these scam attempts lead to genuine-looking sites with the intention to steal personal and financial information.

Issuing a warning on Twitter yesterday, a post on the verified Action Fraud Twitter account read: “UPDATE: We have received over 2,000 reports about these FAKE Netflix emails.

“If you’ve been sent one, don’t take the bait!

“The links in the emails lead to genuine-looking sites that are designed to steal your Netflix password, personal + financial information!”

The scam warning also included further information about the reports, as well as photographs of the reported emails.

“Watch out for these FAKE Netflix emails,” the National Fraud and Cyber Crime Reporting centre urged.

These particular reported emails state that the recipient’s Netflix account is “on hold” due to payment issues.

Included in the email are links to genuine-looking phishing websites.

However convincing they may seem, Action Fraud is warning that the links are designed to steal Netflix login details, as well as personal and financial information.

In the warning, the fraud and cyber crime team went on to offer some further words of warning about scams.

“Your bank, or any other official organisation, won’t ask you to share personal information over email or text,” it read.

“If you need to check that it’s a genuine message, call them directly.”

Should a person spot a suspicious email, they’re directed to forward it to the Suspicious Email Reporting Service (SERS) via Report@phishing.gov.uk.

The Netflix Help Centre provides more information about spotting phishing or suspicious emails or texts which claim to be from the entertainment service.

“Did you receive an email or text (SMS) requesting your Netflix username, password, or payment method? If so, it probably did not come from us,” the website states.

Netflix goes on to state that it will never ask for personal information by texts or email, including credit or debit card numbers, bank account details, and Netflix passwords.

Additionally, Netflix says: “We will never request payment through a 3rd party vendor or website.

“If you receive a text or email requesting any of the above, it is not from Netflix.”

People who receive a suspicious email or text are advised not to click any links in the messages or reply to them.
