Washing blankets with detergent can help keep them smelling fresh. However, according to Lynsey Crombie – also known as Queen of Clean – adding bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar into the routine can help to keep them looking best.

Sharing a video on Instagram, Lynsey shared a super simple cleaning routine that will keep blankets or throws looking amazing.

Firstly, she added a large scoop of bicarbonate of soda into the washing machine drum.

Bicarbonate of soda is a well-known natural cleaning product that can help to tackle odours.

It is also great to use when removing dirt and grime.

When paired with white vinegar, the homemade solution can be just as good as products you buy from the store.

Lynsey then adds a drop of white vinegar into the washing machine drawer, using it instead of fabric conditioner.

If you’re mixing different colours together, the cleaning sensation recommends using a colour catcher to ensure the colours don’t mix.

Next, Lynsey sets her washing machine on for a wash and leaves them to air dry.

She said: “Still super fluffy with plenty of bounce.”

It is also recommended to wash a fluffy blanket on a cool wash or gentle cycle and avoid using bleach to clean them.

For tough stains, using a drop of dishwashing liquid can help to budge them.

Sharing on one Facebook group, cleaning fans revealed their methods of cleaning blankets.

Posting on Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips, one person asked: “I recently got this fleece blanket but I’m not sure how to wash it.

“I’m sure it’s probably filthy by now so any tips and tricks would be welcome.”

One person said: “Put the blanket on a delicate wash with no fabric softener.

“The fabric softener although supposed to make items soft, makes my cushions and blanket go really weird.”

Others also recommended ditching the fabric softener.

One person said: “If you’re looking to make it smell nice, add a small amount of detergent or scent balls to the drum, but don’t put any in the drawer.

“This way, it should smell nice as well as staying fluffy.”

Another suggested: “Wash it on a slow cycle, dry it on a line or radiator. If you put it in the tumble drier it might shed. When dry, brush with a hairbrush or bristle pet brush, it will look good.”

However, blankets are the only bedding item that should be washed on a cool cycle.

According to Mattress Online, sheets and duvet covers should be washed at around 60 degrees to help kill any germs and dust mites which might be present.

They can also be put in a tumble dryer on a high heat which will help remove any further germs built up when drying.
