Different types of floors benefit from different cleaning products and methods, which makes things complicated if you have different types of flooring throughout your home. You need to do more to your floor than vacuuming up the dust. Author of The 15-Minute Clean: The Quickest Way to a Sparkling Home, Lynsey Queen of Clean (lynsey_queenofclean on Instagram) reveals how to clean the most common types of floors in her blog.
Floors should be cleaned at least once a week, which is embarrassing for most of us who only ever clean the floor when guests are coming over.
From vacuuming and dusting to washing and steaming, there are plenty of methods to use… but you have to pick the right one for the floor you have.
Cleaning expert Lynsey said: “You really should use an individual product for every type of flooring you have.
“This sounds like hard work, but it will really bring out the true colour of your flooring and it will also help to bring the whole room together as well.”
Ceramic or even porcelain tiles are quite possibly the easiest types of flooring for you to clean and maintain, according to Lynsey.
She explains in her blog: “If you have spilt something on the floor then all you have to do is mop or steam it up and the job is done.
“If you want to maintain your floor, however, a neutral floor cleaner is great for this.”
The main eyesore when it comes to unclean ceramic floors is the dirty grout, but this is easily fixed.
Lynsey said: “If you make a paste using white wine vinegar and bicarbonate of soda and use a hard small brush, your grout will come up like new.”
Vinyl flooring is available in so many different varieties, which makes it hard to know which cleaning method to use.
Lynsey wrote on her blog: “Vinyl flooring is much easier to clean and it is also very easy to maintain as well.
“If you have spilt something on the floor, you can mop it up by using the same method above.
“However, when you do this, you may find that it leaves streaks.”
Streaks are completely normal but if you want to get rid of them, consider pouring a mix of white vinegar and water directly onto the floor
This will get rid of the streaks, but Lynsey warned it may loosen the adhesive and increase your chances of experiencing floor damage.
She added: “Make sure that you apply it in small amounts, but if your floor is damaged already then consider getting a new one installed.”

Hardwood flooring is one of the finest floors around but it is not the easiest to maintain at all, Lynsey said.
She added: “You need to make sure that you clean it on a regular basis.
“You also need to make sure that you protect the surface layer.”
To clean your wood floor, Lynsey recommends going over it with a hoover before applying a liquid floor cleaner to loosen any debris. Then, use a dry wax applicator.
The cleaning expert explained on her blog: “This will really help you to make the most out of your flooring and it will also help you to really make the whole thing stand out as soon as you walk into the room.”
Carpet cleaning isn’t as difficult as you might think.
First, vacuum the carpet and then apply baking soda or something like Vanish to the carpet.
Spread the powder out and into the carpet with a soft bristle brush and brush it in.
Then, vacuum up the powder to reveal a clean and fresh-smelling carpet.
