Lemons are cheap to buy and super accessible, since Brits can even grow their own lemon trees at home. This waxy, yellow fruit isn’t just great for recipes, it’s a beneficial ingredient for cleaning too – particularly when it comes to the microwave. Express.co.uk chatted to cleaning expert Lynsey Queen of Clean to find out how to clean your microwave with lemons.
You’ve probably heard that bicarbonate of soda and white vinegar are useful cleaning agents, but what about lemons?
Lemons can be used in a number of ways to spruce up your home, mainly because they are acidic.
The acidic nature of a lemon makes it antibacterial, antiseptic, and a form of natural bleach.
If cleaning products work as well as lemons, why bother to use the lemons?
Well, we all know that cleaning products are expensive and damaging to the environment.
Lemons won’t harm sea life or produce harmful fumes, so it’s better to use natural products like this where possible.
On top of that, it’s much more pleasant to clean with lemons as the citrusy smell is refreshing.
How to clean a microwave – the easy hack involving lemons
We should all be cleaning our microwaves in proportion to how often we use it.
If you’re a regular microwave-user, clean it every single week using a lemon.
This will keep your microwave looking neat and tidy, get rid of any harmful bacteria and old food splashes, and add a lovely fragrance to the machine.
Lynsey Queen of Clean recommended using a few lemons to do the job.
First, slice them in half and pop the halves in a bowl of clean, cold water.
Make sure the bowl is microwave safe, of course!
Turn the microwave – with the lemon and water in the bowl – on full power for five minutes.
Lynsey said: “The idea is that the lemon will release the grease stuck in the microwave.
“This will make it really easy to wipe off with a cloth at the end.”
Take a clean cloth and simply wipe away the grease when the microwave cycle is finished, and you’re done!
