From today (September 1), students can try out a Gym Group’s venue for free before deciding whether it’s worth splashing out £109 for nine months’ membership. They’ll be able to choose to go to a gym near home in the holidays and university during term time and it works out at only £12.10 per month after the freebie ends.
Alongside this deal, they are also encouraging new students the opportunity to take part in a three day challenge, where they’ll have the chance to win one of five £100 Amazon vouchers after their third visit.
YouTuber and comedian Chunkz has laced up his trainers and has shared his own fitness journey, which aims to break down the barriers of feeling awkward when going to the gym.
This is following research showing that 63 percent of Gen Z gym-goers (16 to 24-year-olds) admitted to having felt ‘awks in the gym’.
What’s more, a third (32 percent) of Brits are paying for memberships they don’t use because they are too embarrassed to go.
Chunkz said: “Everyone has had awkward moments at the gym.
“It can feel like an intimidating place when you’re first starting out.
“I’ve just been on a massive fitness journey of my own and had bare awks moments like when I used the wrong height on the cable machine.
“So happy I can work with The Gym Group to help younger people embrace the awks and get fit, cause we’re all in the same boat.”

Throughout September, The Gym Group is running deals to get young people started on their fitness journey and smash through their feelings of intimidation.
Incentives that students can take advantage of include:
Student offer: Nine months for only £109-£179 with access to two gyms (that could mean one for home and one for school/college/university)
Free Day Pass: To give new Students the opportunity to try it out and get comfortable before signing up (available for the first two weeks of September)
Three-visit challenge: Get past the awkward three-visit mark and be in with a chance to win 5 x £100 Amazon vouchers
‘Embrace The Awks’ Class: A chance to get paired up and break down barriers with a whole lot of laughs.
Despite many people saying going to the gym fills them with dread, it’s not all bad news.
Those people that love going to the gym cite buddying up with a friend and listening to music as things that get them pumped up and in the mood for moving.
