Carer’s Allowance can provide eligible claimants with £67.60 per week if they care for someone for at least 35 hours per week. On top of this, the person being cared for must also be in receipt of certain benefits such as PIP or Attendance Allowance.
To be eligible, the claimant must be providing a specific type of care which includes helping with washing and cooking, taking the person being cared for to doctor’s appointment or helping with household tasks.
Additionally, all of the following must apply for a claimant to be eligible for Carer’s Allowance:
- They’re 16 or over
- They spend at least 35 hours a week caring for someone
- They’ve been in England, Scotland or Wales for at least two of the last three years
- They normally live in England, Scotland or Wales, or they live abroad as a member of the armed forces
- They’re not in full-time education
- They’re not studying for 21 hours a week or more
- They’re not subject to immigration control
- Their earnings are £128 or less a week after tax, National Insurance and expenses
Where applicants are in receipt of Carer’s Allowance, they’ll also automatically get National Insurance credits for every week of payments received.
These credits will help towards protecting the claimants state pension entitlement.
When a person claims Carer’s Allowance their other benefit payments may change but the total amount they receive will usually go up or remain the same.
It should also be noted that Carer’s Allowance does not count towards the benefit cap, which may have limited what could be paid out.

Claims for Carer’s Allowance can be made online through the Government’s website or through the post.
Before applying, claimants will need to have the following information at the ready:
- Their National Insurance number
- Bank or building society details
- Employment details and latest payslip if you’re working
- P45 if you’ve recently finished work
- Course details if you’re studying
- Details of any expenses, for example pension contributions or the cost of caring for their children or the disabled person while they’re at work
Claimants will also need to provide details on the person they care for which includes their date of birth, address and National Insurance number.
Where claimants are in receipt of payments, they will be required to report any changes in their circumstances to the Government.
This can include starting a new job, entering full-time education or changing income levels.
It is important to inform the Government of these changes as claimants can be taken to court or be issued with a penalty if they give wrong information or fail to report a change.
It is possible to work and get Carer’s Allowance, so long as the claimant spends at least 35 hours in the caring role.
Additionally, claimants can get more support for themselves or the person they care for from their employer, local councils and other organisations.
Claimants may be able to ask their employers for time off for an emergency, flexible working arrangements or respite care “short breaks” if they have carer commitmenets.
