American Express promote Shop Small initiative in 2020 advert

Coronavirus restrictions are continuing to ease across the UK and shoppers are returning to the high street. As shops reopen amid the lifting of the stringent measures, American Express has announced the return of its Shop Small offer.
The initiative is intended to support local businesses after an extremely challenging year.
For three weeks, from June 5 to 25, 2021, American Express Cardmembers will be able to get a £5 statement credit when they spend £15 or more at a participating small business.
This offer is eligible for use up to five times per Card, meaning cardholders could potentially earn up to £25 in statement credit.
It’s important to note the offer can only be used once per location by each Cardmember.
To participate, people must save the offer to their qualifying American Express Card.
Once they’ve done this, they would need to make a qualifying purchase in-store from a participating UK small business before the offer’s end date.
Cardmembers will be able to enrol for the Shop Small offer from Monday, May 1, 2021.
This can be done via the American Express app, or their online account.
They can search for participating stores via the Shop Small Map.
American Express confirmed a second Shop Small offer will also take place later this year, in December 2021.
Details of the second event, and the dates, will be shared nearer the time, but American Express said it would coincide with Small Business Saturday.
It’s important to ensure cardholders should check the full terms and conditions for all the details.
Many have found themselves fortunate enough to save during the coronavirus lockdowns.
However, according to predictions based on figures from neobank Zopa, consumer spending habits are about to start driving the economy forward.
Clare Gambardella, Chief Customer Officer commented: “These figures, and our own credit card data suggest we’re heading for a summer of spending, as consumers begin to splash out on much-missed experiences from the last year.
“Despite the continued impact of Covid on UK economic performance, it is positive that customer spending is already increasing and looks set for a significant rise as cinemas, theatres, and indoor drinking and dining opens up next week.”
Her comments came as the Office for National Statistics (ONS) issued its latest ‘Economic activity and social change in the UK, real-time indicators’ data.
“While the ONS study does not yet show an increase in percentage of people traveling to work, our credit card data suggests that this may well increase significantly next quarter,” Ms Gambardella said.
“As the stay at home order lifted, Zopa saw spending on commuter travel among its customers increase by 50 percent between February and April as more people returned to their places of work.
“There are also early signs that people in the UK are setting their sights on the next stage of restriction easing – early stats from our credit card data shows flight bookings initially increased by 30 percent as green list countries were announced and are likely to soar as consumers have increased certainty about the requirements for travel.”
